Viet Nam, Argentina step up cooperation in timber and mineral supply chains

Viet Nam Trade Office in Argentina is boosting business links to expand cooperation in timber, minerals and investment, opening new opportunities for firms in both countries.

The Viet Nam Trade Office in Argentina recently held a working session with representatives of several Argentine companies operating in trade, mining, timber, energy, and investment to discuss raw material supply opportunities for the Vietnamese market, as well as prospects for investment cooperation between businesses of the two countries.

At the meeting, Ngo Manh Khoi, Head of the Viet Nam Trade Office in Argentina, said that strengthening direct connections with local businesses is one of the office's key priorities to support Vietnamese enterprises in seeking suppliers, accessing the market, and exploring investment opportunities in Argentina. According to Khoi, such connections will be promoted in a practical manner, focusing on products and sectors with clear demand, stable supply capacity, and strong potential for commercial transactions.

Timber materials were identified as one of the most promising areas for cooperation. Argentina possesses abundant timber resources, with key products including sawn pine wood and processed softwood products, while Viet Nam has substantial demand to serve its wood processing and manufacturing industries. Fernando Maniera, a representative of an Argentine company, noted that enhanced direct exchanges between businesses from the two countries would help both sides gain a better understanding of market demand, product standards, and supply capabilities, thereby gradually creating concrete cooperation opportunities.

In addition to timber, copper and mineral products were highlighted by Rodriguez Dacal Federico, a representative of an Argentine enterprise, as sectors with considerable cooperation potential. Argentina is currently accelerating the development of its mining industry through a number of large-scale projects, particularly in the copper sector.

Notably, data from Argentina's National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC) showed that exports of gold and silver products reached USD 3.504 billion in the first six months of 2026, up 56.8% year-on-year. Meanwhile, lithium exports totaled USD 1.126 billion, an increase of 186.3%, while aluminum products generated USD 829 million, up 92.1% compared with the same period of 2025.

These figures reflect the strong growth momentum of Argentina's mining sector and its potential to expand mineral supplies to international markets. In addition, products such as quartz and silicate minerals were introduced for consideration regarding possible supply to the Vietnamese market.

At the same time, the expansion of industrial production, mining activities, and infrastructure development in Argentina is generating substantial demand for energy, technical services, and investment capital, creating cooperation opportunities for international businesses, including those from Viet Nam.

According to Ngo Manh Khoi, beyond importing raw materials, Vietnamese enterprises could also explore opportunities for direct investment in Argentina, particularly in processing, manufacturing, and value-added production based on locally available resources. Among these, wood processing and furniture manufacturing stand out as sectors with significant potential.

The two sides also discussed prospects for bilateral economic cooperation as Viet Nam continues to diversify sources of raw materials for domestic production. Argentina is currently one of Viet Nam's key suppliers of agricultural commodities, including corn, soybeans, and soybean meal. Given the complementary nature of their economic structures, Viet Nam and Argentina have substantial room to expand cooperation in trade, investment, and processing industries.

In addition, both sides exchanged views on the progress of negotiations for the Viet Nam–Mercosur Free Trade Agreement. Improved market access conditions are expected to create more favorable opportunities for businesses in both countries, contributing to stronger trade and investment ties between Viet Nam and Argentina, as well as other Mercosur member states, in the coming years.

The Viet Nam Trade Office in Argentina will continue to serve as a bridge connecting businesses from the two countries, helping diversify supply sources for Viet Nam while expanding business cooperation opportunities for Vietnamese enterprises in Argentina and across South America.
