Unlocking e-commerce potential in Lai Chau's highlands

E-commerce in highland regions is undergoing a transformation but continues to face significant barriers in infrastructure and digital skills. However, an upcoming series of events in Lai Chau province is expected to serve as a catalyst for breakthrough development.

As digital transformation accelerates across Vietnam, the e-commerce sector in the Northern Midland and Mountainous Region has begun to witness encouraging efforts and positive outcomes. This development marks a pivotal step in narrowing the regional digital divide and integrating local producers into the national and global digital economy.

Despite such initial progress, the region continues to face significant challenges. Information technology and logistics infrastructure remain unevenly developed across many localities. The adoption rate of e-commerce among enterprises is still relatively low. Cooperatives and household businesses encounter numerous limitations in digital management capabilities, particularly in brand development and market expansion. Furthermore, access to digital platforms, online marketing tools, and skills in livestream-based sales remains insufficient.

Lai Chau Province

To address these bottlenecks and foster sustainable e-commerce development in the region, the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT), in collaboration with the People’s Committee of Lai Chau Province, is organizing a series of e-commerce events under the theme: "Fostering Regional Linkages in E-Commerce Development - Elevating Northern Midland and Mountainous Products", scheduled from May 24 to 25, 2025.

Key components of the event include a digital technology model exhibition, showcasing of regional specialty products, a Mega Livestream to promote local goods, signing ceremonies for e-commerce cooperation between businesses and provincial Departments of Industry and Trade, and intensive training workshops hosted by e-commerce enterprises.

This event series aims to strengthen practical competencies, stimulate product consumption, and build a comprehensive and efficient e-commerce ecosystem for the region. Notably, it places strong emphasis on digital upskilling for youth and startup cooperatives, laying the groundwork for a locally sourced, digitally proficient workforce in the Northern Midland and Mountainous Region.
