Vietnam's cashew exports rise in value despite falling output

In the first five months of 2025, Vietnam exported nearly 277,000 tons of cashew nuts—down 5.3% in volume compared to the same period last year. However, export value surged by 19.4%, driven by a significant increase in average selling prices.

According to data from the Department of Customs, Vietnam exported 81,110 tons of cashew nuts, with a value of USD 550.83 million in May 2025. This represents a month-on-month increase of 10.5% in volume and 11.5% in value. Compared to May 2024, exports were up by 8.1% in volume and 33.3% in value—marking the second consecutive month of growth year-on-year.

Cumulatively, in the first five months of 2025, Vietnam exported 276,760 tons of cashew nuts, totalled USD 1.88 billion in value. While export volume dropped 5.3% from the same period in 2024, total export value rose by 19.4%.

Vietnam’s average cashew export price has been steadily increasing as well. In May 2025, the average price reached USD 6,791 per ton—up 0.9% from April and 23.3% year-on-year. For the January–May period, the average export price stood at USD 6,809 per ton, up 26.1% compared to the same period in 2024.

Vietnam’s top five cashew export markets in the first five months of 2025 were China, the United States, the Netherlands, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Germany. Among these, China and the UAE recorded strong growth, emerging as the primary contributors to the overall export performance. However, cashew exports to traditional markets including the United States, the Netherlands, and Australia remained under pressure due to ongoing market challenges.

China imported 24,620 tons of cashew nuts from Vietnam in May, valued at USD 156.38 million. This marks an increase of 3.7% in volume and 4.9% in value compared to April. Year-on-year, these figures represent a surge of 44.4% in volume and 67% in value.

For the first five months of 2025, Vietnam exported 65,790 tons of cashew nuts to China, with a value of USD 414.94 million, up 21.7% in volume and 41.2% in value compared to the same period last year.

In contrast, exports to the United States continued to decline. In May, shipments to the U.S. totaled 17,360 tons, valued at USD 117.6 million—down 9.6% in volume but up 14.7% in value from May 2024. Over the first five months of the year, Vietnam exported 59,750 tons of cashew nuts to the US worth USD 406.88 million, reflecting a 21.7% drop in volume but a slight 0.1% increase in value year-on-year.
