General Secretary To Lam held talks with US President Donald Trump at the White House on bilateral ties and regional and international issues of shared concern.

On the morning of February 20 (local time), General Secretary To Lam held talks with US President Donald Trump at the White House. The two leaders discussed a wide range of issues concerning bilateral cooperation as well as regional and international matters of shared interest.

On the occasion of attending the opening meeting of the Gaza Peace Council in Washington, D.C., the General Secretary met with President Trump in a cordial and open atmosphere.

At the meeting, General Secretary To Lam congratulated the US and President Trump on the successful organization of the opening session of the Gaza Peace Council. He underscored that Vietnam was among the first countries to accept the invitation to participate in the Council and stands ready to coordinate with the US and other members to implement the peace plan.

The General Secretary affirmed that Vietnam consistently attaches importance to and wishes to further promote the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and the US in a stable, substantive and effective manner. The two leaders expressed satisfaction with positive outcomes in political and diplomatic ties, economic and trade cooperation, post-war recovery efforts, science and technology, education and training, and people-to-people exchanges.

General Secretary To Lam proposed enhancing high-level exchanges and contacts between the two sides. Regarding economic and trade cooperation, he stressed that this remains a key pillar of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. He expressed the hope that both sides will continue frank and substantive dialogue on outstanding issues in the spirit of balancing and harmonizing interests in accordance with each side’s legitimate conditions and interests, for the benefit of businesses and people of the two countries.

President Donald Trump congratulated General Secretary To Lam on his re-election as General Secretary of the Party Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam for the 14th tenure, and expressed his pleasure at welcoming him to the White House. The US President conveyed his affection for the Vietnamese people and for the General Secretary personally, and reiterated the US commitment to supporting a “strong, independent, self-reliant and prosperous” Vietnam.

President Donald Trump welcomed and thanked Vietnam for announcing its participation in the Gaza Peace Council, and highly appreciated the General Secretary’s direct attendance at the opening meeting. He noted that this demonstrates Vietnam’s increasingly important role and standing in the international arena, as well as its strong commitment to peace, stability and global cooperation.

The US President commended Vietnam’s efforts to balance bilateral trade and the high-value contracts signed during the Party chief’s visit. He responded positively to Vietnam’s proposals on economic, science and technology cooperation, and said he would direct relevant agencies to soon remove Vietnam from the strategic export control list (D1 - D3).

President Donald Trump affirmed that the US continues to regard Vietnam as an important partner in the region, and spoke highly of Vietnam’s growing role and voice at regional and multilateral forums.

On this occasion, the General Secretary extended an invitation to President Donald Trump and the First Lady to visit Vietnam again at an early date. President Donald Trump gladly accepted the invitation and said he would visit Vietnam soon.
