Unique stays on the rise
Amidst the rising enthusiasm, the definition of a “perfect stay” is evolving. While comfort and convenience remain important, many travelers are now looking for accommodation that offers something more: a sense of novelty, connection and experience. And the numbers back it up: alternative accommodation is seeing a surge in popularity, with a 10% y-o-y increase in searches globally compared to last summer.
From boats and beachfront bungalows to countryside homes and tents under the stars, Booking.com offers over 8.1 million listings in homes, apartments, and other unique places to stay. Whether you’re traveling as a group, a couple, or with kids in tow, here’s how this growing trend is playing out and how to make the most of it.
For Groups: More Space, More Connections
Group travel is gaining momentum this summer, with 1 in 4 Vietnamese travelers planning trips with friends*. Traveling with friends or extended family calls for space to gather, share meals and enjoy moments together.
This year, group travelers are showing a growing interest in riads and holiday homes, with global searches up by 16% and 12% respectively.
Riad: In Morocco, it refers to a traditional home built around a central courtyard, often featuring a fountain or small pool and surrounded by shaded living quarters. For a similar atmosphere closer to home, both Alsahar Hoi An Boutique Villa (Hoi An) and Dewan Bangkok (Bangkok, Thailand) echo the elegance of Moroccan courtyards where arched halls, mosaic details, and tranquil pools create a serene hideaway for group travellers.
Holiday homes: Fully equipped with kitchens, living spaces and amenities, holiday homes offer both practicality and privacy for groups. Framed by thoughtful design and calming corners, LaDa’s House (Danang) and Dolma Hongdae (Seoul, South Korea) creates space for quiet joy for slow mornings, shared meals, and restful afternoons.
For couples: romance in every detail
In 2025, couples are increasingly valuing memorable experiences over material gifts. A significant majority across generations prefer the gift of travel to physical presents. This shift aligns with the 48% of Vietnamese travelers planning to take a trip with their partner this year.
Globally couples are drawn towards stays that offer privacy, charm and a memorable setting perfect for slowing down and reconnecting. Tented camps and chalets are seeing an global increase of 16% and 13% respectively as compared to same time last year.
Tented camps: Blending the allure of nature with comforts, these luxe tents come with real beds, private baths and open-air lounging. WoCAL ReTREAT Ke Ga (Mui Ne, Binh Thuan) and Firelight Camps (New York, US) deliver a high-end camping experience with elegant interiors, lush surroundings, and poolside relaxation for couples seeking romance with a touch of tropical indulgence.
Chalets: Cosy and often set in scenic, secluded landscapes, chalets bring a sense of calm ideal for couples. Whether it’s sharing breakfast around a kitchen table or relaxing in a garden after a day of sightseeing, Nha Soi Homestay Da Lat (Dalat)’s creates room for meaningful moments. For couples seeking a quiet stay in a charming suburban home, Chalet de Paris (Paris, France) offers cozy apartments for relaxing after a day exploring nearby Paris.
For families: comfort, nature and space to explore
Family vacations are set to play a big role this summer. Today’s families are seeking more than just sun and downtime- 88% of Vietnamese parents say they’re looking for trips that expose children to a variety of cultures and experiences. Where a family stay can set the tone for the entire trip.
Increasingly, accommodations that balance structure with freedom are gaining traction, reflected in the 19% and 16% rise in global searches for villas and camping, respectively.
Villas: With multiple bedrooms, kitchens, and often private outdoor areas, villas give families the flexibility and space they need. Andochine Villas Resort & Spa (Phu Quoc) and Villa Samadhi by Samadhi (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) features spacious private-pool villas just steps from the beach, with kid-friendly facilities and warm, attentive service designed for families seeking both relaxation and connection.
Camping: Sleeping close to nature can be a source of wonder for kids and a break from routine for parents. Many family campsites offer structured activities, safe environments, and shared amenities that make outdoor living easy. Lakeville Suối Rao Glamping Retreat (Vung Tau) and Cockatoo Island Accommodation (Sydney, Australia) combine panoramic sky views with spacious tents and private indoor bathrooms for families loving the stargazing vibe.
