Vietnam’s efforts to promote gender equality

(VEN) - According to the Global Gender Gap Report 2024, Vietnam's gender equality ranking stands at 72nd out of 146 countries, an improvement of 11 places compared to 2023.

Thanks to joint efforts of ministries, sectors, and agencies at both central and local levels, significant progress has been achieved in promoting gender equality in recent years.

The percentage of women participating in Party committees at all levels has consistently increased across terms. Notably, 59 percent of ministries and ministerial-level agencies, and 74.6 percent of provincial-level local governments have key female leaders.

The proportion of female deputies in the 15th National Assembly reached 30.26 percent, surpassing the global and regional averages. The gender gap across all levels of education has narrowed; the network of support services for victims of gender-based violence has been expanded and improved in quality.

The role of women in the economy has been enhanced, with an increasing number of outstanding Vietnamese female entrepreneurs and executives recognized and honored by global economic forums.

Many female officers have participated in the United Nations Peacekeeping Operations, demonstrating the immense potential of women and proving that when their roles are empowered, they can excel in any mission.

At a recent ceremony held in Hanoi to launch the Action Month for Gender Equality and Gender-Based Violence Prevention and Response 2024, Minister of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs Dao Ngoc Dung emphasized the importance of focusing on developing an inclusive and diverse social welfare system, aiming to enhance accessibility for various groups, especially disadvantaged and vulnerable individuals, women and children, creating opportunities for both women and men to equally participate in and benefit from all aspects of social life. This is a key task and one of the top priorities of the labor, invalids and social affairs sector in the coming period.

Therefore, the leadership of the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs calls upon ministries, sectors, agencies, Party committees, authorities at all levels, organizations, associations, international organizations, media agencies, and every citizen to take effective actions to promote gender equality. These collective efforts are aimed at fostering the prosperity and happiness of each individual, each family, and society as a whole.

To empower and create more opportunities for women and girls, Pauline Tamesis, UN Resident Coordinator in Vietnam, on behalf of the United Nations organizations in Vietnam, stated that the UN is supporting efforts to enhance the capacity of the Vietnamese People's Public Security force in effectively handling cases, ensuring child-friendly and victim-sensitive investigative procedures that are gender-responsive and address gender needs.

The UN stands ready to assist the Vietnamese Government in addressing challenges and recommends actions, such as advocating for increased allocation of necessary resources to implement regulations and policies related to gender equality.
