Vietnamese tourists spend an average VND21.4 million per trip during Tet 2025, an increase of 58 percent compared to last year |
Domestic travel will focus on February, while international trips tend to be planned after Tet, with March seeing a significant increase in demand for overseas travel.
These data are provided in the report “Vietnamese travelers’ readiness for Lunar New Year 2025,” released by the travel market research firm The Outbox Company on January 20.
The report provides detailed insights into the travel trends and behaviors of the Vietnamese people during the Lunar New Year 2025. Tet is the most important holiday in Vietnam and one of the two peak travel seasons for the domestic market each year.
Survey results show that the top five favorite domestic destinations for Vietnamese travelers during the Lunar New Year include Da Nang, Ha Giang, Hanoi, Khanh Hoa, and Lam Dong. Meanwhile, the top five most popular international destinations are China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Singapore, and Thailand.
In terms of travel types, there is a clear difference between domestic and international trips. Domestic travel mainly consists of self-planned trips with spending on services at the destination. Meanwhile, for outbound trips, Vietnamese travelers prefer all-inclusive tours, with 44 percent opting for this format. For international travel, especially to distant destinations requiring extensive preparation, Vietnamese travelers prioritize convenience and well-structured plans.
The average duration of a domestic trip is 3-4 nights, while international trips are longer, averaging 5-6 nights. There is also a significant difference in spending. The average cost of a domestic trip is nearly VND14 million, whereas international travel expenses are higher, averaging nearly VND37 million per trip. This disparity reflects Vietnamese travelers’ willingness to spend more on international trips, especially during Tet.
Lunar New Year trips are typically taken with families, or close friends. Specifically, 46 percent of domestic tourists choose to travel with their families. Similarly, for international travel, going with family or a spouse is more common. Solo travel is less popular during Tet, accounting for only a small proportion of both domestic and international trips.
Notably, spending by Vietnamese travelers on the Lunar New Year 2025 is 58 percent higher compared to last year. The nine-day holiday provides opportunities for extended trips, with travelers tending to spend more on international trips than domestic ones. Vietnamese travelers want to seek premium experiences and are willing to spend more on overseas travel.
