HÀ NỘI — Typhoon Yagi, after making landfall in the northern coastal provinces of Quảng Ninh and Hải Phòng on Saturday, is still on course towards the capital, Hà Nội.
The world's second-most violent tropical cyclone in 2024 after Hurricane Beryl is currently having a strongest wind force of 133-148km/h near its centre, equivalent to levels 12-13 on the Beaufort wind scale (about category 2 on the Saffir-Simpson scale), gusting to level 15, according to an update from the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecast (NCHMF).
According to early reports, Yagi claimed four lives in its path on Saturday, with three dead in Quảng Ninh Province, and one victim in Hải Dương. The storm also injured 78 people in Quảng Ninh and Hải Phòng.
Five cement barges and one small wooden boat have sunk at their mooring locations in Quảng Ninh. Additionally, a cargo ship (Huyển Trang 2 - Hải Phòng) has broken free from its anchor and drifted.
Trees were uprooted and fallen in northern provinces, with many houses in the area damaged. Power lines to Quảng Ninh and Hải Phòng were either damaged or automatically cut off due to the storm, which caused province-wide power outages, according to Vietnam Electricity (EVN) late Saturday.
The EVN also said that they currently do not have a plan to cut off power in the capital of Hà Nội, but noted that strong wind could damage power lines in the power grid, which can cause local outages.
Authorities are advising people in areas affected by the typhoon to stay at home and not to go out unless really necessary. Those already outside should seek proper shelter.
