| The antique market opens on the pavement of Dinh Cong Trang Street, Vinh City, Nghe An Province, attracting a large number of antique lovers. | |
This market is known to almost every antique lover in Nghe An and Ha Tinh Provinces. Some people come here to buy, while others come just to have a cup of coffee and contemplate the antique items. The market opens every weekend, selling a variety of antiquities, some of them are several hundred or even one thousand years old. Buyers and sellers sometimes do not care about the price but just talk about special antiques. |
According to Giap, a seller in the market, said the market is the meeting place for antique lovers. They come here to sell, buy or just to show the items they have collected. The value of an antique item depends on its age as well as its rareness.“With a great passion for collecting antiques, we have traveled across the country to find unique and rare antiques for exchange in the market,” Giap added. |
According to sellers in this market, antique lovers and traders in Vinh City for many years have maintained exchange activities by coming to the market to sell or buy the collected items.
In the past, antique exchange activities took place inside houses. For the past two months, the antique market has been moved to the pavement of Dinh Cong Trang Street, Vinh City.
Tran Van Binh from Vinh Tan Ward, a well-experienced antique collector in Vinh City, is one of the founders of the antique market. He said he sells antiques mostly to satisfy his passion and does not care much about money. It took Binh much time to find antique items that are hundreds of years old. Binh wants to sell the collected items to those who have the same passion for antiques as his. “Although it is the oldest antique item in the market, this glazed terra-cotta jar cannot be sold for a high price because its cracks have been fixed…,” Binh said |
An antique lamp in the market, according to its seller, is about 1,000 years old. The seller did not tell reporters its price. The price of each item depends on its rareness, age, perfectness, as well as negotiations between the seller and the buyer. The market is the place where antique lovers and traders meet and exchange the collected items. Most of them know and have business relations with each other. Therefore, they negotiate the price in an easy-going atmosphere. |
| “We don’t display for sale on sidewalks items worth VND70-80 million or even higher each to avoid taking risk but sell them at home, to those who afford buying them and have knowledgeable about them,” Binh said. | |
Ceramic and porcelain bowls, plates and spoons are among the most popular products at the market.
According to Binh, antiques displayed on sidewalks are often of low economic value, sold for VND1-2 million/plate or bowl.
Giap, an antique dealer, is quite satisfied with his ceramic vase. He said it is a Bat Trang ceramic vase with blue enamel, embossed motifs and engraved inscription, dating from the end of the Le Dynasty and the beginning of the Nguyen Dynasty, and aged 300 -400 years. Thang from Le Mao Ward said, “I am very fond of collecting antiques, especially porcelain ones. I go to the market weekly to find my favorite items. It is OK because goods there have an affordable price for me.” |
Nostalgic people can find many old items, recalling a difficult time in the country, such as bicycle parts, watches, flashlights, oil lamps and war keepsakes. Not only people in Nghe An Province but also visitors from the neighboring province of Ha Tinh and other provinces come to the weekend market to find old and antique items. |
Something interesting about this market is that people can go there not only for buying something but also talking with sellers about their favorite items.
This unique market makes people more interested in traditional cultural and historical values.
