According to the Ministry of Transport, the project to renovate and upgrade the runway and taxiway of Con Dao Airport was approved through Decision 1795/QD-BGTVT on October 14, 2021.

Based on the proposal from the Ba Ria-Vung Tau Provincial People’s Committee and following the Government’s directives, during the feasibility study phase, the Ministry of Transport assigned relevant units and international consultants to conduct reviews and develop a comprehensive investment plan for various components of the project.

Earlier, in September 2024, based on the results of research conducted by international consultants, the Ministry of Transport submitted a report to the Prime Minister regarding the investment plan for the development of Con Dao Airport.

Through the report, the ministry has proposed that the relevant authoriry allow further renovation and upgrading of the runway and taxiway using public investment funds to soon accommodate mid-range aircraft, serving the travel needs of the public.

The Ministry of Transport has assigned the Ba Ria-Vung Tau Provincial People’s Committee to develop a public-private partnership investment, management and operation project for Con Dao Airport for summision to the Prime Minister for approval.

Following the Prime Minister’s recent directives, the Ministry of Transport will continue to review and work with the Ba Ria-Vung Tau Provincial People’s Committee to finalize the investment plan for Con Dao Airport within October 2024. The Ministry will also report to the Prime Minister to seek early approval for the project’s implementation in order to meet air transport and tourism demands, as well as to support local socieconomic development.

Con Dao Airport is currently capable of accommodating small aircraft such as the ATR72 and Embraer E190.

After Bamboo Airways suspended its Hanoi-Con Dao route, only Vietnam Airlines and VASCO (a subsidiary of Vietnam Airlines) continue to operate ATR72 aircraft on the Con Dao-Ho Chi Minh City route (16 round trips per day) and the Con Dao-Can Tho route (5 round trips per week).

To enhance civil aviation operations, the Ministry of Transport and the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam have requested and facilitated Vietnam Airlines to expand its operations to Con Dao. In particular, other airlines are encouraged to find aircraft suitable for Con Dao Airport’s infrastructure to help increase capacity on these routes. This would also provide passengers with more airline options, better meeting the public’s travel needs.

Following the Prime Minister’s directive, the Ministry of Transport will continue to work with the Ba Ria-Vung Tau Provincial People’s Committee to finalize the investment plan for Con Dao Airport in October 2024, and report to the Prime Minister to seek early approval for the project’s implementation./.
