Company applies environmentally friendly technology

(VEN) - Aware of the need to protect the environment during production, the Vinacomin - Mao Khe Coal Co., Ltd. has applied new, environmentally friendly technologies in mineral exploitation.
The company has strictly complied with the laws of the State and environmental protection regulations of the Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group (Vinacomin).

Aiming to improve the working environment for employees and ensure sanitation in production areas as well as the surrounding environment, the company strictly complies with regulations on industrial waste collection and management. It collects and classifies hazardous waste at its source, and the waste is stored in covered warehouses at production units. The waste is divided into separate storage tanks labeled with signs identifying the specific type of waste. The company has signed a contract with the Vinacomin - Environment Co., Ltd. for the collection, transportation, treatment and disposal of hazardous waste.

The company has signed a contract with Hai Yen Co., Ltd. for the collection, transportation and treatment of domestic waste. It uses waste rock to fill in the surface areas that have subsided during the implementation of projects. The unused waste rock is transported and dumped at the company’s approved disposal site.

The company also pays great attention to wastewater treatment. It has received investment from Vinacomin to build five wastewater treatment plants. Of these, two plants specialize in treating wastewater from underground mining activities with a total capacity of 3,000cu.m per hour, operated by the Vinacomin - Environment Co., Ltd., and three plants specialize in treating domestic wastewater with a total capacity of 555cu.m per day. In the first five months of 2024, the company treated more than four million cu.m of wastewater at the cost of nearly VND15 billion.

The company has installed dust control systems inside and outside the mines to minimize dust generation and improve the microclimate conditions in the underground mines, creating a more ventilated working environment and reducing dust-related illnesses for workers. The company has also installed a new system of nets and water sprayers to control dust in the screening area and access road, while organizing regular water spraying for dust control on the concrete internal roads passing through residential areas, with the frequency adjusted daily based on air humidity.

Thanks to comprehensive and synchronous measures to ensure occupational safety and health and protect the environment, the company has faced no serious accidents over the past three consecutive years (2021, 2022, 2023).

In order to effectively protect the environment, the company will continue to implement measures committed in the approved environmental impact assessment reports for its projects. Additionally, the company will roll out an environmental protection action program to improve the working environment for employees, ensure sanitation in the production areas as well as surrounding residential areas. It will also continue to apply advanced technologies in production and environmental protection. The company has developed a comprehensive environmental protection plan for its production facilities, and reported it to Vinacomin to secure further investment in 2024 and the 2023-2025 period, with a vision towards 2030. Specific measures include planting trees at production sites, building sediment ponds for wastewater treatment and automated vehicle washing stations, installing dust control systems and high-mast lighting systems at production areas.
