A milestone of Vietnamese wind power equipment sector

(VEN) - Recently, a batch of “Made in Vietnam” wind power equipment was successfully delivered to a Singaporean partner, marking a major milestone of and paving the way for the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PVN) to conquer foreign markets.

Accordingly, the first shipment of equipment for the Exhaust System of a gas turbine power project in Singapore, weighing a total of 773 tonnes, was successfully delivered to Jurong Port, Singapore by the PetroVietnam Technical Services Corporation (PTSC) Quang Ngai (PTSC Quang Ngai), a subsidiary of the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PVN).

The exhaust stacks are the largest units ever fabricated by PTSC Quang Ngai, with each system reaching a height of 34.3 meters and comprising more than 386,040 components. After arrival at Jurong Port, these units will be installed to cater for the construction of the Jurong gas turbine power plant, an important renewable energy project in Singapore.

The project began construction in May 2023 with a designed capacity of 680MW, utilizing advanced “F-series” gas turbine technology. This allows for future conversion to hydrogen fuel and reduced CO2 emissions. The plant is expected to commence commercial operations in early 2025, playing a crucial role in meeting the growing electricity demand and stabilizing the overall power grid in Singapore.

PTSC Quang Ngai is in charge of fabricating around 1,300 tonnes of equipment for two turbine groups, including complex products such as stacks, elbow ducts, silencers, and support structures, among others. After over eight months of dedicated effort, PTSC Quang Ngai successfully delivered 44 lots of equipment from Dung Quat Port to Jurong Port, meeting the client’s expectations. The remaining work was scheduled to be completed and delivered by mid-September 2024.

Earlier, on August 28, the Petrovietnam Technical Services Corporation and its Singaporean partner Sembcorp Utilities Pte Ltd (SCU) held in Singapore a ceremony of the hand-over of contract packages on wind and hydrological measurements and geological surveys under the project on exporting offshore renewable energy from Vietnam to Singapore.

The packages aim to provide accurate data on the natural and technical conditions at the project site. The work includes collecting wind data, measuring hydrological parameters, conducting geological surveys of the seabed, assessing the potential for wind power exploitation and identifying advanced technologies for developing the offshore wind power system.

The project, part of the strategic cooperation between the two countries in the field of clean energy, was launched early last year through the signing of a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) on investment cooperation and export of clean energy from Vietnam to Singapore within the framework of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s official visit to Singapore.

Speaking at the event, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PVN) Le Manh Hung emphasized the event’s importance, considering it a milestone in the field of offshore renewable energy of both countries.

The successful implementation of the packages will provide a foundational database for the design, construction, and operation of an offshore wind farm in Vietnam, with a capacity of 2.3GW.

The packages play a crucial role in ensuring the project’s safety and effectiveness while offering PTSC and Sembcorp the opportunity to apply the latest technologies, contributing to the sustainable development of Vietnam’s wind power industry.

The project for exporting offshore renewable energy from Vietnam to Singapore not only creates opportunities for economic and technological growth in both countries, but also marks a significant step in promoting international cooperation in clean energy. The project’s success will help mitigate the impacts of climate change and enhance the position of Vietnam and Singapore in the global renewable energy market./.
