Vietnam’s engagement in Brazil G20 Summit highlights its rising position internationally

Ambassador Nghi granted an interview to VOV, shedding light on the significance of Vietnam’s engagement in the summit in Rio de Janeiro on November 18-19.

VOV: How do you assess Vietnam’s contributions to multilateral mechanisms, especially as the country has been frequently invited to G20 meetings in recent years?

Ambassador Nghi: Vietnam’s regular invitations to G20 meetings reflect its significant contributions to multilateral mechanisms and demonstrate its capacity and responsibility towards global issues.

First of all, this demonstrates Vietnam’s active role in international cooperation. The country has shown a strong commitment to multilateral collaboration, contributing to global discussions on sustainable development, security, and climate change. Its participation in the G20 highlights its rising status on the international stage.

Second, Vietnam desires to share its development experience. One of the key topics to be discussed in the coming summit in Rio de Janeiro is poverty reduction and sustainable development. Vietnam, once among the poorest countries, has transformed into one of the fastest-growing economies. From 1989 to 2023, its GDP per capita has increased 40 times.

Third, Vietnam represents developing countries to make a practical contribution to the settlement of global issues. The country can act as a bridge between developed and developing economies, voicing the perspectives and needs of these countries on global issues.

With a proactive and responsible approach to international integration, Vietnam will coordinate with other countries to promote shared international concerns, such as strengthening partnerships and supporting developing nations in achieving sustainable development goals in line with the UN Agenda 2030, while strengthening cooperation to reinforce a peaceful and stable environment in the region and the world based on the adherence to international law.

VOV: In 2024, Vietnam and Brazil will celebrate 35 years of diplomatic relations. How significant is Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s working trip to Brazil in enhancing the comprehensive partnership between the two countries?

Ambassador Nghi: Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s visit to Brazil will not only reinforce political relations but also create opportunities for establishing and developing closer cooperation partnership between our two countries, particularly in areas where both have strengths and interests, such as agriculture, science and technology, energy transition, and bioenergy. Notably, these issues are relevant to discussions at the coming G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro.

Additionally, this visit will enhance cooperation in other fields of mutual interest, including Halal food production, culture, sports, tourism, education, and security-defense.

Participating in the G20 summit while commemorating 35 years of diplomatic ties also acknowledges Brazil's proactive role in regional and global issues. This is an opportunity for Vietnam to contribute to common discussions and strengthen bilateral exchanges, thereby enhancing Vietnam’s position in the world.
