Vietnam, Japan deepen green hydrogen cooperation through Yamanashi

Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Truong Thanh Hoai and Governor Nagasaki Kotaro discussed expanding Vietnam - Japan cooperation in green hydrogen, green ammonia, energy transition.

Representing Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade at the meeting were leaders from the Department of Industry, the Chemicals Agency, the Agency for Innovation, Green Transition and Industrial Promotion, the Agency for Foreign Market Development, and the Department of Oil, Gas and Coal. The Japanese delegation included senior officials from the Yamanashi Prefectural Government, along with representatives of the Embassy of Japan in Vietnam.

During the meeting, Governor Nagasaki Kotaro reaffirmed his strong commitment to promoting cooperation with Vietnam. He noted that he has personally directed and participated in numerous initiatives aimed at strengthening ties between Yamanashi Prefecture and Vietnamese localities, including Hanoi and the provinces of Quang Tri Province and Tay Ninh Province.

Governor Nagasaki also highlighted Yamanashi’s significant potential and strengths in green hydrogen and green ammonia development, while proposing enhanced cooperation with Vietnam in investment and the development of these sectors. He emphasized the prefecture’s readiness to support the Ministry of Industry and Trade through the sharing of expertise, technology transfer, and workforce training for Vietnamese officials and engineers.

Welcoming Governor Nagasaki Kotaro and the delegation from Yamanashi Prefecture, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Truong Thanh Hoai highly appreciated Japan’s pioneering role in advancing Asia’s energy transition and its active efforts to strengthen energy cooperation with Vietnam. He noted that energy cooperation remains one of the key pillars of bilateral relations, as reaffirmed during the recent official visit to Vietnam by Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae in early May.

Underscoring the strategic importance and necessity of developing green hydrogen and green ammonia to support Vietnam’s economic development and its commitment to achieving carbon neutrality (net zero), the Deputy Minister welcomed and endorsed Yamanashi Prefecture’s proposals for cooperation in technology and human resource development, which would help Vietnam advance these emerging sectors.

At the same time, acknowledging the currently high production costs of green hydrogen and green ammonia, Deputy Minister Truong Thanh Hoai suggested that investors from Yamanashi consider launching pilot projects in Vietnam, particularly in localities with strong potential such as Quang Tri Province, where abundant solar and wind resources could be effectively leveraged. He affirmed that the Ministry of Industry and Trade stands ready to facilitate connections between Yamanashi Prefecture and relevant agencies, as well as local partners, to support research, site surveys, investment, and cooperation in green hydrogen technology development in Vietnam.

Governor Nagasaki Kotaro expressed his appreciation for the Ministry’s proactive support and cooperation, affirming that Yamanashi Prefecture would continue promoting business connectivity between the two countries while further advancing joint research on green hydrogen production with Vietnam.

On this occasion, Governor Nagasaki also extended an invitation to the Ministry of Industry and Trade to consider attending the International Green Hydrogen Conference, which will be hosted by Yamanashi Prefecture in late 2026.
