Viet Nam to restart Ninh Thuan nuclear power project

The National Assembly approved the Government's proposal to restart the Ninh Thuan nuclear power project at its 8th working session on November 30.

On November 25, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Viet Nam (CPV) had agreed on the policy to restart the Ninh Thuan nuclear power project in a bid to firmly ensure national energy security.

The Government estimates that power consumption will increase by 12-13percent in 2025 and reach 1,200 billion kWh by 2045 compared to 1,000 billion kWh in the 8th National Power Development Plan.

The project involves building two nuclear power plants with a combined capacity of 400MW in the central province of NinhThuan.

The Electricity of Viet Nam (EVN) has been assigned by the Government to be the investor of the project.

The EVN has worked with Russian partners on the Ninh Thuan 1 nuclear power plant and Japanese partners on the Ninh Thuan 2 nuclear power plant.

The locations where the two plants are located have been carefully surveyed and evaluated by domestic and foreign consultants, meeting strict international criteria.

Also on November 30, the National Assembly approved the Law on Data and the Government's proposal to cut the value-added tax (VAT) by 2 percent, from 10 percent to 8 percent.

The new VAT policy shall take effect in the first half of 2025, applicable to all goods and services except for telecommunications, financial activities, banking, securities, insurance, real estate trading, metal products, mining products (excluding coal mining), refined petroleum, chemical products, goods and services subject to special consumption tax./.
