Traditional costumes of ethnic minorities well preserved

Not only do traditional costumes embody the ethnic identity, but they also contain artistic and historical values specific to each ethnic group, passed down through generations as a message from the past to the present.

Nguyen Thi Hai Nhung, Head of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s Department of Ethnic Culture said she believes that traditional costumes are a cultural element that encompasses many values and distinctive characteristics, serving as an important sign to differentiate one ethnic group from another. Depending on natural conditions, landscapes, environment, and society, each ethnic group has chosen and developed materials, fabrics, processes, weaving techniques, dyeing, tailoring, embroidery, decoration, structural shapes, and colors of their traditional costumes based on their own unique values and identity.

Additionally, the participation of the community, particularly artisans and elderly individuals from ethnic minorities who hold rich knowledge about their own group’s costumes, is crucial. Prestigious people within the community should actively promote and educate the younger generations to understand and take pride in wearing or even mentioning traditional costumes. The use of traditional costumes during festive occasions, festivals, and significant national days will make traditional costumes more prevalent in the life of ethnic minority communities, fostering a sense of pride, awareness of the preservation, and promotion of their traditional costumes.
