From businesses to households, rooftop solar power is steadily gaining traction across Quang Ninh province. Lower electricity costs, greater energy independence, and strong support from the power sector are driving wider adoption of this clean energy solution.
Joining hands to advance rooftop solar
As electricity demand continues to rise and the global transition toward cleaner energy accelerates, rooftop solar power is becoming increasingly widespread across Quang Ninh, benefiting both businesses and households. Operational experience has shown that this renewable energy source not only significantly reduces electricity expenses but also creates new opportunities for sustainable energy use.
Nguyen Van Thu, Head of the Technology Department at Quang Ninh Water Supply Joint Stock Company (Quawaco), said the company began investing in and installing rooftop solar systems in May 2026. After two months of operation, the system has been running reliably while reducing electricity consumption by approximately 35%. This translates into monthly savings of around VND 30 million, or nearly VND 400 million annually.
“After two months of operation, the company has decided to expand rooftop solar installations, particularly at facilities serving office operations. From now until the end of this year and into early next year, we will continue installing systems on the remaining office buildings,” he said.
According to Quawaco, the company also plans to assess the feasibility of installing solar systems at selected treatment facilities, pumping stations, and water plants where rooftop space is suitable and technical requirements can be met.

“If the electricity sector introduces a mechanism to purchase excess electricity, the company will further evaluate expanding its solar capacity. Should the investment prove effective and surplus electricity be available at locations where on-site demand is lower, we will study the possibility of supplying and selling electricity back to the grid,” he added.
He also noted that the company intends to maximize the use of rooftops and tank surfaces across its treatment facilities and pumping stations while tailoring solar solutions to the operational characteristics of each site.
Beyond helping businesses reduce operating costs and secure a more reliable electricity supply, rooftop solar is also being developed on a larger scale across Quang Ninh. The renewable energy source is increasingly being integrated with more efficient land use and combined production models. In practice, the province still possesses considerable potential for further solar development, particularly as businesses proactively assess natural conditions and select investment models best suited to their operations.
In addition to proactive investment by businesses, rooftop solar deployment in Quang Ninh is being accelerated through strong support from the local power sector, which has intensified public outreach, provided technical guidance, and assisted both households and businesses in implementing appropriate solar systems.
Pham The Long, Deputy Director of Ha Long Power under Quang Ninh Power Company, said the number of households installing rooftop solar systems has increased steadily over the years. Growth has accelerated in recent years, particularly since 2026.
According to Long, Quang Ninh Power Company and its affiliated units have gradually rolled out rooftop solar systems at their own office buildings. The initial phase has focused on the headquarters of Quang Ninh Power Company and several larger power units. At Ha Long Power, installation is also underway.
Alongside deploying solar systems within its own facilities, the local electricity sector has actively supported households throughout the investment process. Long said Ha Long Power, in coordination with Quang Ninh Power Company, has assigned engineers and technical staff to visit households directly to provide technical advice and recommend suitable installation plans.
“We advise customers on selecting system capacities that match their electricity demand and consumption patterns. At the same time, we provide guidance on choosing solar panels, battery storage systems, and operating solutions to maximize the efficiency of rooftop solar while improving overall electricity use,” he said.
The electricity sector’s continued support and technical consultation, together with the increasingly visible benefits experienced by users, are helping strengthen public confidence in rooftop solar investment. For many households, the benefits extend beyond lower electricity bills to greater energy independence in daily life.
Rooftop solar is transforming the way people use electricity
Sharing his experience after installing a rooftop solar system, Bui Tien Trung, a resident of Cao Xanh ward in Quang Ninh province, said his family has been using the system for only three months, yet electricity costs have already fallen substantially.
According to Trung, during the peak summer months, his family's electricity bill typically approached VND 4 million per month. However, after installing rooftop solar, reliance on grid electricity dropped sharply. In June alone, data recorded by the inverter showed that the household consumed more than 1,000 kWh of electricity, but purchased only around 170 kWh from the grid during rainy and overcast days, resulting in an electricity bill of approximately VND 428,000.

“In the past, during periods of peak demand, there were times when scheduled power outages occurred, forcing my family to rely on a backup generator, which was rather inconvenient. I had been interested in solar energy for a long time, but because I was not familiar with electrical engineering, safety was always my top concern. This year, I finally decided to invest in a rooftop solar system to enjoy greater convenience and energy independence,” he said.
Notably, the family's solar system is integrated with a battery storage unit with a capacity of approximately 16 kWh. According to Trung, after around 5 p.m., when electricity generation from the solar panels declines, the household switches to stored energy. Under normal daily usage, such as cooking, watching television, and operating one air conditioner in the bedroom, the stored electricity can supply power until around 5 a.m. the following morning.
After that point, the system automatically switches to grid electricity. In practice, however, the family rarely needs to draw electricity from the grid in the morning because sunlight typically returns around 6 a.m., allowing the solar system to resume electricity generation. By then, indoor temperatures have also stabilized, reducing the air conditioner’s power consumption.
Based on three months of practical experience, Trung believes rooftop solar is a worthwhile investment for households with suitable conditions. Beyond lowering electricity bills, the system enables families to become more self-reliant in meeting their daily energy needs.
“For those who are considering installing rooftop solar or are still undecided, I believe it is worth serious consideration. Solar energy is highly convenient. It helps conserve energy resources while giving families greater independence, especially during unexpected power outages or when electricity prices increase,” he said.
The early successes achieved by businesses, the electricity sector, and households demonstrate that rooftop solar holds increasingly promising prospects in Quang Ninh. When designed to match actual demand and local conditions, this renewable energy source not only reduces costs and enhances energy security but also encourages more efficient and responsible electricity consumption.
The proactive participation of businesses and households, together with the continued guidance and support provided by the electricity sector, will be key to unlocking the full potential of rooftop solar. Every new system brought into operation contributes another source of clean energy while easing pressure on the power grid.
From businesses to households, rooftop solar power is delivering tangible economic benefits while enhancing energy self-sufficiency. As adoption continues to expand, the model will contribute to diversifying electricity supply and reducing pressure on the national power system during periods of peak demand.
