PM urges China to boost imports of Vietnam’s high-quality farm produce

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met President Xi Jinping in Tianjin, urging China to boost Vietnam farm imports and expand cooperation in rail, energy and tech.

TIANJIN, Aug 31 - Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh met Chinese President and Communist Party chief Xi Jinping on Saturday in Tianjin, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit 2025, where he urged Beijing to expand imports of Vietnam’s high-quality farm products and deepen cooperation across multiple sectors.

Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh conveyed greetings from Vietnam’s top leaders and thanked China for sending a high-level delegation to celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of reunification and the 80th National Day. Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh congratulated China on its development achievements under Chinese President and Communist Party chief Xi Jinping leadership, calling the country a key driver of global growth.

The two leaders reviewed progress in bilateral ties, including stronger political trust, more substantive defense and security cooperation, expanded economic and trade links, closer supply chain integration, and growing people-to-people exchanges. Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh stressed Vietnam regards relations with China as a strategic priority in its foreign policy.

Both sides agreed to advance ties under the “six more” framework, boosting strategic exchanges and broad cooperation in rail connectivity, science, technology and innovation. Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh proposed accelerating the first meeting of the Vietnam-China Joint Railway Committee, seeking concessional financing, training support and cooperation in developing a domestic railway industry.

The prime minister urged China to widen market access for Vietnamese pomelos, seafood and meat products, approve durian planting codes, expand smart border gates and discuss cross-border economic zones. Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh also called for broader energy cooperation, including clean energy, larger electricity imports, and a 500kV power link, while pushing for stronger collaboration in digital transformation, e-commerce and artificial intelligence.

Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh asked Tsinghua University to provide AI PhD scholarships for Vietnamese students and support large-scale training in key sectors such as semiconductors, quantum and satellites. He also proposed visa exemptions, more commercial flights and stronger youth and cultural exchanges.

Chinese President and Communist Party chief Xi Jinping welcomed Vietnam’s participation at the SCO summit, reaffirmed support for the Communist Party of Vietnam’s 14th National Congress, and called for stronger coordination on infrastructure, rail projects such as the Lao Cai-Hanoi-Hai Phong line, and border trade.

Both leaders exchanged candid views on maritime issues, agreeing to manage differences responsibly, uphold joint understandings and safeguard peace and stability in the region.
