Pangasius exports target US$2 billion in 2025

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), out of the 240,000 broodstock pangasius ready for breeding, 180,000 were selected from commercial farming, while 60,000 are high-quality pangasius transferred by the Research Institute for Aquaculture No.2 from the 2016-2020 Breeding Program (including 40,000 that have already spawned and 20,000 to spawn for the first time).

As of the end of October 2024, there were 25.95 billion pangasius fry and 3.9 billion fingerlings. It was estimated that by the end of 2024, there were 30 billion fry and 4.0 billion fingerlings, equivalent to 116 percent of the 2023 figures.

According to the Directorate of Fisheries under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Vietnam currently has 1,920 facilities producing and nursing pangasius fingerlings. These include 2 facilities breeding and nursing broodstocks, 76 producing fry, and 1,842 nursing fry into fingerlings.

Climate change, combined with changes in upstream flooding, is affecting the freshwater flow in the Mekong River and increasing salinity intrusion in the Mekong Delta, which could impact pangasius farming activities in 2025.

The supply of fishmeal and fish oil, the main ingredients for feed production, is trending downward. Additionally, increasingly stringent regulations on illegal fishing are making reliance on these resources unsustainable.

The pangasius sector aims to achieve a production volume of approximately 1.65 million tonnes and export value of US$2 billion in 2025.
