Nuclear power, once sidelined, is now back in the spotlight as the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) is reviewing practical needs based on National Power Development Plan VIII. Although initially proposed in 2009, the policy for nuclear power development was later put on hold. However, time has come to reconsider its potential, Tan told a regular press conference in Hanoi on October 23.

Addressing safety concerns, he pointed to the global advancements in nuclear technology. Third and fourth-generation technologies have ensured maximum safety with virtually zero risk, he said, adding that the ministry is actively studying and identifying suitable technologies.

Bui Quoc Hung, Deputy Director of the ministry's Department of Electricity and Renewable Energy, stressed that the development of nuclear power is essential for socio-economic growth.

Despite previous setbacks, notably the temporary halt of the Ninh Thuan nuclear power project due to human resources and financial constraints, Hung said he believes that nuclear power's potential must be re-explored.

Once the green light is given, the ministry is prepared to outline the subsequent procedures for specific projects, he confirmed./.
