Hanoi to introduce electronic ticketing for public transport in 2024

Hanoi’s transport department is planning to introduce a unified electronic ticketing system for its public bus and metro services in 2024.

Currently electronic tickets are being used for the city’s metro line 2A as well as nine electronic bus routes, but the ticketing systems for bus and metro services are implemented using different technologies.

In 2023 the transport department will formulate a technical standard framework and a shared ticketing policy for the public transport system and recommend them to the municipal government for approval.

A unified ticketing system is expected to reduce the time required for buying and checking tickets as well as the staff needed for such tasks.

Furthermore, electronic ticketing will provide operators with data on users’ travel demand and routes to create an appropriate operation scheme.

A unified ticketing system for different modes of public transport was previously planned by Hanoi to come into operation in 2019, but for now users still have to use different tickets for bus and metro services.
