At the first session of the 16th National Assembly, General Secretary To Lam was unanimously elected by the National Assembly to hold the position of President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

On the morning of April 7, continuing the first session of the 16th National Assembly, the National Assembly convened separately to receive a report from the Standing Committee of the National Assembly on the approval of personnel, including Vice Chairpersons of the Ethnic Council, Deputy Chairpersons of Committees, and members who are full-time National Assembly deputies operating in the Assembly’s councils and committees.

Immediately after, the National Assembly carried out procedures to elect the President. The Assembly continued in plenary session at the chamber to complete the process for passing the Resolution on the election of the President.

From 9:15 a.m. the same day, deputies listened to Le Quang Manh, Secretary General of the 16th National Assembly and member of the Standing Committee of the National Assembly, present the draft Resolution on the election of the President.

With 495 out of 495 deputies present, accounting for 100% of those voting in favor, the National Assembly approved the resolution to elect General Secretary To Lam as President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam for the 2026 - 2031 term.

According to the Constitution of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, after being elected by the National Assembly, the President shall take the oath of office.

Standing before the National Assembly, the people, and voters nationwide, General Secretary and President To Lam took the oath of office: “Under the sacred red flag with a golden star of the Fatherland, standing before the National Assembly, the people, and voters, I, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, solemnly swear: to remain absolutely loyal to the Fatherland, to the People, and to the Constitution of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and to strive to fulfill the duties entrusted by the Party, the State, and the People.”
