Fostering a robust breakthrough in Vietnam - Laos relations

Party General Secretary To Lam’s State visit to Laos will forge a robust breakthrough in bilateral ties, said Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Manh Cuong.

From December 1 - 2, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee To Lam and his spouse, accompanied by a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation, will pay a State visit to Laos.

The visit is made at the invitation of Thongloun Sisoulith, General Secretary of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party (LPRP) Central Committee and President of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, and his spouse. Speaking to the press regarding the significance, objectives, and key agenda of the trip, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Manh Cuong described the visit as one of Vietnam's most critical foreign affairs activities in 2025. Notably, it marks Party General Secretary To Lam’s first State visit to Laos in his new capacity.

The visit takes place at a significant juncture as Laos celebrates its 50th National Day (December 2, 1975 - 2025) and as both nations prepare for their respective Party Congresses in 2026 to determine future development strategies.

The trip reaffirms the determination of the leaders of both Parties and States to prioritize the inheritance and promotion of the “great friendship, special solidarity, and comprehensive cooperation” between Vietnam and Laos, ensuring these ties develop in alignment with the requirements, vision, and interests of both nations.

A highlight of the agenda is the high-level meeting between the CPV and the LPRP - the most important mechanism in the cooperative relations between the two Parties and countries.

“Leaders from both sides will exchange updates on the situation of each Party and country, evaluate the results of recent bilateral cooperation, and set forth strategic, long-term directions for relations. These efforts aim to serve the interests of the people, foster peace, stability, cooperation, and development in the region and the world, and create a solid foundation for both Parties and States to collaborate closely in national construction and defense in the new era,” Deputy Minister Cuong stated.

According to the Deputy Foreign Minister, within the framework of the visit, Party General Secretary To Lam will hold talks and meetings with senior Lao leaders and attend the 50th National Day Celebration of Laos, one of the country's most momentous events of the year.

The comprehensive and meaningful activities during this visit will further consolidate high-level common perceptions between the two nations' leaders. They underscore that the great friendship, special solidarity, and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Laos are invaluable assets and core factors of their special relationship. This sentiment echoes the verses of President Ho Chi Minh “Vietnam - Laos, our two countries; love deeper than the Red River and Mekong”.

Given the foundation of this special relationship, profound political trust, and vast potential for cooperation, Deputy Minister Nguyen Manh Cuong expressed his conviction that Party General Secretary To Lam's State visit would leave a strong imprint on the mutual prosperity of both nations. It is poised to create a robust breakthrough in bilateral cooperation in the new situation, thereby contributing actively to peace, stability, cooperation, and development in the region and the world.
