According to a communiqué issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), at the invitation of To Lam, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Viet Nam and President of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, and his spouse, President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar Min Aung Hlaing and his spouse will pay an official visit to Viet Nam from September 4 to 6, 2026.

Viet Nam and Myanmar officially established diplomatic relations on May 28, 1975. The two countries elevated their ties to a Comprehensive Cooperative Partnership during a state visit to Myanmar in August 2017. The move marked a new milestone, opening a new chapter in bilateral relations.

Building on a long-standing relationship, Viet Nam has consistently attached importance to developing cooperation with Myanmar across all fields for the common benefit of the peoples of both countries. Viet Nam has continuously supported Myanmar in its socio-economic development and national reconciliation efforts, while expressing its wish for Myanmar to prosper and thrive, for its people to enjoy a better life, and for the country’s position in the region and the world to be further enhanced.

For its part, Myanmar highly values Viet Nam’s socio-economic development achievements and has consistently attached importance to promoting the Comprehensive Cooperative Partnership with Viet Nam. The country has also created favorable conditions for Vietnamese enterprises to cooperate, conduct business, and invest effectively in Myanmar.

In the field of investment, the Vietnamese business community in Myanmar currently comprises 17 enterprises operating regularly and six enterprises maintaining limited operations or downsizing, a sharp decline compared to the period before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nevertheless, Viet Nam remains among Myanmar’s important foreign investors, with a number of notable projects, including Mytel in telecommunications and digital infrastructure; HAGL Myanmar Center/THACO, featuring a real estate, hotel, office, and commercial complex in Yangon; BIDV and other enterprises operating in banking, manufacturing, agriculture, and animal feed production.

Despite numerous challenges on the ground, Vietnamese businesses believe the two countries still have substantial potential for cooperation in five key sectors: agriculture and food processing; energy; digital infrastructure; essential goods and reconstruction; and logistics and finance.

In terms of trade, total bilateral trade reached USD 336.28 million in the first six months of 2026, up 26.3% year-on-year. If this growth momentum is maintained, total trade turnover for the full year is projected to reach between USD 670 million and USD 750 million.
