According to a recent report by the Vietnam Internet Network Information Center (VNNIC) under the Ministry of Information and Communications, after more than 27 years since it connected to the global Internet in 1997, Vietnam currently has 1,148 networks with independent IPs and ASNs, all of which are stably interconnected.

The Internet is entering an intelligent era with the development of new technologies, such as IPv6, 5G/6G, IoT, AI, IDC/Cloud, SDN/NFV, and Blockchain, leading to an explosion of connected devices and necessitating the transition to the next-generation Internet protocol, IPv6. IPv6 is a fundamental and essential element of the Internet infrastructure, digital infrastructure, and digital services. By leveraging IPv6 technology, it is possible to create new values.

With a strategic development plan and effective action programs, Vietnam has been leading the transition of the Internet to the next generation, IPv6. The IPv6 adoption rate in Vietnam has reached 65.5 percent, ranking second in ASEAN and among the top seven countries globally, rising two places compared to 2023. The total number of independent ASN networks is 864, while the number of networks using independent IP addresses has reached 1,148, exceeding the targets set for the 2021-2025 period.

In 2024, Vietnam celebrated the 30th anniversary of the official presence of its national domain “.vn,” symbolizing national sovereignty in cyberspace. The number of “.vn” domains has reached approximately 630,000, ranking second in ASEAN, 10th in the Asia-Pacific region, and 40th globally, up six places compared to 2023. By the end of November 2024, around 60,000 domains within the new namespace, such as “id.vn,” “io.vn,” “ai.vn,” and “biz.vn,” had been registered and put into use. This reflects the positive transformation of the community, aiming to maximize the value of the national domain “.vn” in the digital environment.

The core Internet infrastructure operates stably with a Service Level Agreement (SLA) performance of over 99.99 percent. Approximately 845 out of 1,148 IP address members of VNNIC have signed ROA/RPKI resource certificates, achieving an average implementation rate of 96.4 percent, significantly higher than the global average rate (48 percent) and that in Asia (53 percent). With the implementation of RPKI technology, the number of routing security incidents in Vietnam decreased by 73 percent in 2024 compared to 2023. Moreover, the deployment of the DNS ROOT system domestically has accelerated domain name query by up to five times.
