The institute specializes in conducting fundamental and applied research, providing design consultancy and technical services, transferring technologies and conducting experimental production.

According to the institute’s leadership, outstanding research projects carried out by the institute include research on building strain towers for use as pit-props at the Nam Mau Coal Company; preparing design and cost estimation for the Vi Kem copper mining project; preparing a project for exploitation expansion to increase the mining capacity at the Sin Quyen copper mine; providing design and construction consultancy for underground mining at Nui Beo, Khe Cham II-IV and Duong Huy coal mines; preparing design for building the Hon Gai Coal Processing and Storage Center. Along with carrying out scientific research projects, the institute operates laboratories meeting standards and certified as eligible to serve environmental monitoring and environmental analysis activities. Besides, the institute also has three VILAS 070, 170, 534 for enviromental analysis, electrical equipment calibration and test labiratories with more than 100 recognized tests.

For its great efforts over the past more than 50 years, the institute has received many awards, including the Second Prize of the 1997 VIFOTEC Award and a patent for the project “Researching the method of dredging mud and digging the Coc Sau coal mine”; the Second Prize of the 1999 VIFOTEC Award for the project “Building and perfecting a technological line for production of magnetite powder for use in sifting coal with the autogenous medium technology.” In 2000, the institute received the State Award in Science and Technology and the First Prize of the Creative Youth Award.

In 2003, the institute received the Third Prize of the VIFOTEC Award for the project “Researching technological solutions for using hydraulic props in underground coal mining.” In 2007, it won the First Prize of the VIFOTEC Award for the project “Applying the rotating drum suspension and autogenous medium technologies to sifting coal from mines in Quang Ninh Province.” This project also received a Gold Medal from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and a Gold Medal from the Seoul International Invention Fair (SIIF) in 2008. In 2009, the institute received a Golden Award at the Vietnam-ASEAN+3 Techmart.

In 2008, the institute also received a Third Prize of the VIFOTEC Award for the project “Creating foundation emulsion for use in producing bulk emulsion explosives.” In 2009, it won a First Prize of the VIFOTEC Award and a Golden Award at the Vietnam-ASEAN+3 Techmart for the project “Selecting a suitable mechanization technology and designing, manufacturing self-propelled scaffolds for use in mining at thick coal seams running at a gradient of up to 35 degrees in Quang Ninh Province.”
